Kertha Gosa is a historical building built in the time of Klungkung Empire in 17^th century. Kertha Gosa is located in 40 km East of Denpasar, about 1 hour driving from Bali touristic center Kuta. The name of Kertha Gosa is taken from Sanskrit “Kertha” which means “peaceful” and “Gosita” which means “announcement”. The building was used as a custom courthouse back then. Almost half of Kertha Gosa is renovated so the building is not that original anymore.

Entrance fee to Kertha Gosa is US$1.2/adult and US$0.6/kid, opens from 09.00-16.00. As we enter the area, there are sarongs available for us to wear since it is a must to go inside the area by wearing the sarong, especially for tourists who are wearing short pants. For tourists who already wear trousers or long-dress, it is ok to enter the area without wearing the sarong.

What makes Kertha Gosa unique is the whole artistic complex complete with Balinese style statues and a hall built in the middle of lotus pond. There are actually 2 halls here; one is in the middle of lotus pond while another is at the right side of the complex. You can visit the smaller hall first which is located at the right side of the complex. Statues of dragons welcome you to the hall and as you arrive inside the hall, you will see artistic paintings on the ceiling, full with Hinduism philosophy paintings. The paintings are about the live of humans, evil spirits who will judge villains, heaven for good people, and the Hindu gods keeping the balance of 4 wind directions. In here you can also find the dinner table used by Klungkung Empire.

After visiting this hall, there is Gili Park or Balai Kambang (Kambang Hall), built in the middle of the pond. Beautiful lotus plants are spread on the pond, statues of gods at and giants are decorating the bridge as a passage to the main hall. The ceiling in Kambang Hall is also filled with paintings, depicting the live of human, the live of husband and wife, and Sutasoma story.
