You need to walk about 1/2 mile to enter the area where shops of souvenirs, postcards, keychains, etc asre sold here. The entrance fee is 750 rupees (about US$15). After walking around the platform you can enter the Mausoleum itself there is a very grand archway. You cannot go inside the mausoleum before you put a cloth around your feet. Going inside barefoot is not recommended as you certainly might burn your feet on a sunny day since marble gets heating up under the sun. But sruprisingly once you are inside, you will feel fresher than outside. The building is surrounded with intricately carved screens which allow air to circulate the building. The interiors are beautiful, but rather dark. There are two cenotaphs for the emperor and his wife in the center of the mausoleum which are surrounded by a screen of carved marble which you can walk around. They are actually buried in their tombs below this level in the crypt of the mausoleum but it is not accessible to the public.
