The Charm of West Ireland
March 2, 2011 No CommentsWest Ireland has many interesting places to go. If you are thinking about spending your Christmas somewhere in West Ireland, Killarney is one of the most favorite, since the Christmas tradition is very strong kept there. Other than that, Christmas in Killarney is very calm and a good moment for you to do sightseeing around the area.
Traditional Irish houses are stoned-wall, rooftop covered with grass, and have fireplace with peat (traditional fuel for the fireplace). You will feel like you’re in the medieval era, the same to what’s shown in Mel Gibson’s “Brave Heart”.
GAP OF DUNLOE
Gap of Dunloe is located between MacgillyCuddy’s Reeks (a mountain range) and Purple Mountain, County Kerry. There are 5 lakes to see; Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Anger Lake, and Black Lough). All those lakes are connected by Loe River.
DINGLE PENINSULA
Want to enjoy Atlantic Ocean view? Visit Dingle Peninsula, which was famous after a “Ryan’s Daughter”, a 2 Academy Awards Winner, was shot there. There is also a unique town named Dingle, where it’s full of Irish colorful houses. In Dingle, seafood is a common food. Also try Dingle’s black beer which is made from mountain water from mountain nearby. Pubs here are also open for family, so if you come to Dingle with your family and kids where it has live music, Irish’s traditional music to dance!
THE CONNOR PASS
The Connor Pass is a magnificent place and yet also is dangerous for its curvy road. Amazing views you can see are gulf, ravine, some lakes, and there is a tunnel leads to the hill. Watch every step you take while looking around the area.
RING OF KERRY
In south Dingle, there is an area surrounding Iveragh Peninsula where passing-by buses have to move one by one, to avoid danger, since the road is small.
The biggest town in west coast area is Galway. As a famous touristic town, it also is a “gate” to other famous travel destinations. Pubs in Galway are always full, so better to come before 7 pm to get seats. Hotels in Ireland

In the area, you can find some facilities dedicated for tourists such as visitor’s building, cafeteria, souvenir shop, and also a presentation corner where documentary movie about the cliff is shown for tourists
CONNEMARA
For extreme sport lovers, Connemara is what you have to visit. Hiking, biking, fishing and even painting are your choices to spend time there. Other than sports, Connemara also offers tourists the mix of natural sites such as Killary Harbour and Kilkieran bay, Twelve Bens Mountains, river, lake, shore, and Atlantic Ocean. Amazing, isn’t it?
CASTLE CHARMS
Ireland is a country with many castles, representing the lives of European Kings from Medieval Century. Some of them are now opened for touristic destinations. Near Galway, there is Dunguaire Castle, which was built in 17th Century. It opens every day from May to September only, and is known as the most beautiful castle in Ireland. Other than seeing what’s inside the castle, there is also a medieval banquet for tourists to enjoy which offer medieval food, music, and the traditional dances.
FACT: It is believed by the local people that whoever says their wishes in front of Dunguaire Castle’s gate, it will come true by night.
Other than Dunguaire Castle, Bunratty Castle is interesting to visit as well. This castle is older than Dunguaire, built in 15th century. Different to Dunguaire Castle, Bunratty Castle opens a whole year for tourists. Right next to the castle, you will find the traditional village, which is still kept the way it was. It will give you the feeling of living in old Ireland. Hotels in Ireland
